Dawson Creek: An Illustrated History grew out of several people’s wishes to do something lasting to celebrate the city’s 50th anniversary in 2008.
A previous history of Dawson Creek was written by our city’s
first librarian, Marjorie Coutts, and published in 1958 by the South
Peace Historical Society. Hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles
have been written about Dawson Creek since then, but no further attempt
to look at our complete history has been written in 50 years.
An early decision was made that Dawson Creek: An Illustrated History
would not be a scholarly study of the community’s history.
Instead, the book developed into a series of topical studies, richly
illustrated with historic and modern day photographs. In some ways, the
photos are the most important part of the book, but the narratives are
also important because they sketch the growth of Dawson Creek from a
very small one-street hamlet in 1920 to a bustling, modern city in
2008.
Inevitably, some events, people and stories have been left out that would have been included had space permitted.
Dawson Creek: An Illustrated History will bring
our community’s interesting story into the present and be a
fitting anniversary tribute to the city and its residents.
